I - Island is my ongoing project about alienation, solitude and nostalgia. I grew up on Sakhalin Island. I now live on Manhattan, the most crowded island in the world, yet one can feel lonely and isolated here. I often feel as an island in the ocean of NYC. To take this photograph I had to escape and travel 16 time zones by airplanes, trains, cars and boats. Lighthouse Aniva is one of the most remote places on Earth. Because of the radiation there, most of my film was destroyed, which is why I cherish this self-portrait even more, the intimate and fleeting moment of reconnecting with my roots.
