As the world became disrupted with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, engineer Elias Macke, Leipzig, Germany, decided to turn a period of social isolation and lost connections into the realisation of a fantasy project: the construction from scratch of a functioning submarine, the “Markus Heller”.
Through restless construction, research, projecting, and testing, the “Markus Heller”, built uniquely for recreational and self-satisfactory reasons, is a wonder that makes the impossible possible, that brings megalomania into everyday life.
Italian freelance photojournalist. With a background in grassroots activism, her work spans issues relating to social justice, anthropology, human rights, feminism, the environment, and food production. Selene was raised in the Italian Dolomites and now lives between London and Berlin. Her belief in research, slow journalism and an ethos of political participation informs her approach to documentary projects. Photography is for her a political tool.
