In Shanghai, supporting layers of intertwining highway is a pillar decorated with nine bronze dragons. Legend states construction couldn’t proceed until a monk discovered the dragon resting below and advised workers how to appease the beast. The monk passed soon afterwards, many suspecting this was the price paid for exposing the dragon’s hidden lair. I always wanted to capture these illuminated highways. The image is a single long exposure on tripod. I waited for cross-traffic then posed in front but stepped out of frame before the exposure completed to create the ghostly self-image.
