Oblivion/archangels

  • Photographer
    Susanne Junker

Angels are considered immortal supernatural beings. But what happens when they are "hurt" by war, destruction, decay, oblivion? These feet of very old archangel sculptures resembling human bodies are located near a mass grave from WWII/1945 in Berlin. And even though wounded by time, but they still watch over us fallible humans. The photographs are black and white, because over time photographs fade - only paintings by light and shadow are eternal. The camera is a very small simple Sony DSC-W830 not to disturb the other graveyard visitors, without additional equipment, only natural light.

The Necropolis Project is a research project in Berlin concentrating on visualization of WWII, mass graves and Holocaust. I am the project's initiator and director, however, there are more than 150 architecture students, volunteers and supporters to work for exhibitions, presentations and publications.
