The Salton Sea

  • Photographer
    Jim Riche

The Salton Sea was created back in 1905 when Colorado River breached an irrigation diversion structure and water ran into the then-dry Salton Sink for the next two years. Today the Salton Sea is in a battle for its survival with man and nature. There were yacht clubs, speed boat races, and Hollywood stars drove the 45 minutes south east from Palm Springs to have fun in the clear blue water. Communities grew up around the Salton Sea shoreline: Desert

Jim Riche graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1974 with a BFA in Photography as a Fine Art. After years in visual effects for TV and film, Jim now lives in Rancho Mirage, CA, and has returned to photography. His series on Mid Century architecture has led to commissions, including the cover of "The Desert Modernists" book created by Modernism Week to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2015. Jim's photographs have been used in numerous publications and Modernism Week promotions. A new book of images will be released this fall.
