Along the Abose-Okai Road (in Accra) there is one of the largest metal recovery sites in Africa: Agbogbloshie Scrappyard. Electronic materials arrive here from Africa, Europe and America. All kinds of electronic and metal devices: computers, monitors, cars, refrigerators, televisions, home appliances and much more, are destroyed by hammering or fire. The precious metals recovered: copper, gold, silver are separated, loaded into containers and then shipped to China, where they are melted and reinserted into the production process. Recovery operations have a heavy evironmental impact.
